Here is the requested information re the pactor modem product. The pactor modem is utilised to send and receive email via your HF radio. There are two separate networks set-up around the world for this purpose. The Sailmail network (annual membership of US$250) is available to all vessels with a marine radio license issued. The Winlink network (free) is available to persons holding a ham radio license. It is possible to use both networks from the one vessel.

There are basically two pactor modem packages available - pactor 3 (price $1549) and pactor 4 (price $2499) - the only key difference is that pactor 4 transmits the email data roughly twice as fast.

Installation with an Icom m802 is straightforward. You attach two cables (provided) between the M802 radio body and the pactor modem (small box about the same size as a traditional telephone based modem). You then load the provided Airmail software onto your laptop, put a few settings into the set-up wizard, and then attach the pactor modem with a standard USB cable (provided) to a USB port on your laptop. The Airmail software will recognise the modem and you are then set to send your first email. Email is composed within the software in the same way as for land based email client with the key difference being that when you are ready to send the email you simply select a land based radio station to receive your email transmission.

The Land Based receiving station is selected from a drop down list above the email composition template and once selected the software automatically switches the radio to the required frequency and initiates an antenna tuner sequence and sends off the email. Any incoming email is also picked up at the same time.

The only real difference between radio based email and land based email is that radio email is a text based email system only - ie graphics and attachments are not encourage. That said, a three page text email will whiz out quite quickly

I can offer a 10% wholesale discount on pactor modem products

Hello Ian

Thanks for your enquiry - please refer out typical marine radio package quotation below. We do not deal in used marine radios and do not recommend that you go down this path. It is very difficult to know what abuse marine radio gear may have suffered - ie exposure to a water dumping etc. As the primary purpose for an HF radio is emergency comms - reliability of the equipment is critical.

A typical marine radio package consists of radio (m802), matching antenna tuner (Icom AT140),a grounding point to the sea (ie grounding plate) and antenna.

The addition of email at sea via a pactor modem package is also popular addition

Here is the pricing for a typical marine radio package sold by us:

Item                               Qty. Price Subtotal.

Icom M802 Marine Radio New         1 $2,099.00 $2,099.00 (incl: hand mic, manual, power cable etc)

Icom AT140 Tuner New               1 $  699.00 $  699.00

OPC-1147/N SHIELDED CONTROL CABLE  1 $  115.00 $  115.00 (links radio to tuner)

Coxial Cable 25 feet               1 $   34.00 $   34.00 (carries radio signal to tuner)(other lengths are available)

Feeder Cable                       5 $    4.99 $   24.95 (links tuner to antenna feedpoint) (this is per metre price)

Copper Grounding strap             1 $   14.00 $   14.00 (links tuner to grounding point) (price is per metre)

Grounding Plate                    1 $  299.00 $  299.00 (must be fitted to the underside of the vessel - not required if you have a metal hull)

Icom MB75 Flush Mounting kit       2 $   59.00 $   118.00 (if you wish to flush mount the m802 control head and speaker)

Clip on Ferrites                   4 $    9.49 $   37.96 (clip onto the cabling of any onboard device that maybe susceptible to radio interference)

Line Isolator                      1 $   79.00 $   79.00 (reduces possibility of interference to other onboard electronci devices)

DSC Receive Antenna & Base         1 $  119.00 $  119.00 (Enables your radio to receive DSC distress calls from other boats)

GPS connector cable                1 $   26.00 $   26.00 (Connects GPS to M802)

Plus shipping - varies with order

You can see all of these items on our webpage at the link below:

 http://www.radios.net.au/marine-radio-gear/marine-hf-ssb-radios/icom-m802-hf-marine-radio-with-dsc-ic-m802/prod_59.html

If you are on a tight budget the options for saving money are as follows:

Substitute the Icom m710 marine radio (new) at $1649. The m710 does not have DSC functionality.

If ordering the M710 you can substitute a cheaper antenna tuner - the Icom AT130 antenna tuner ($549) or Mtech AT130 tuner ($449) - both these tuners will do the same job as the the AT-140 but will take a few seconds more to tune your antenna.

You can also substitute a ham radio such as the Icom 718 HF radio. Although cheaper at $849 this radio does not have DSC and will not last anywhere near as long as it does not have any moisture proofing in its construction. It is also a 100 watt radio versus 150 watts for the m802 and m710 (more power = increased range)

If you have a boat with a mast we recommend that you go with our Rope Antenna product - $239 (this is a commercial backstay antenna product) - see it on our webpage here:

http://www.radios.net.au/marine-radio-gear/marine-antennas/backstay-antenna-ropeantenna-/prod_785.html

If you do not have a mast then we recommend either the 4.9M ($349) or 7.3M ($399) marine grade whip antenna with base ($59) - plus freight of $70 (must ship separately in a long tube)

If you wish to add an email at sea pactor modem package:

PTC-IIUSBT System to suit IC-M802 with 1.5m cables (modem to

transceiver) $1,999 (Add $85 for us to make longer cables - not recommended)

Please note: this price includes the pactor 3 upgrade and also the normally optional bluetooth functionality

A typical installation looks as follows - refer the attached PDF document

M802 comes with power cable, remote head, microphone, speaker etc and is installed at the operating position.

The Icom AT140 tuner is installed as close to the grounding point (first priority) and feedpoint of RopeAntenna (2nd priority)as is possible.

The control cable (opc 1147n above) and the coaxial cable run from the radio to the tuner. (these distances / lengths are not critical) The "feeder cable" runs from the tuner to the feepoint of the RopeAntenna The grounding plate must be mounted on the outside of the hull making direct contact with the seawater (or grounded directly to a metal hull) and a length of copper strip must tun from the tuner to this grounding point (this is the distance that is most critical to keep short).

It is recommended that the grounding system for your boat electrical system be separate from that used for your radio system.

We thank-you for giving us the opportunity to quote on your prospective marine radio requirements

Let me know if we can assist with any further information

Hello

This radio will cover all HF marine freqs inclu 27mhz marine, Ham HF, VHF marine and Ham VHF/UHF. It will not however cover UHF CB. It is not possible to find a HF radio that also covers UHF CB in the one box (even after modification)

The only disadvantage in using a ham radio like the Icom 7000 in a marine environment is that it will not last as long and it does not have marine specific emergency features such as DSC. A marine grade radio like the Icom m802 or Icom m710 are designed at the factory for marine environments - ie moisture proof connections, cases is rubber gasket sealed. The marine radios also put out 150 watts versus 100 watss for a ham radio.

You can see the m802 and m710 on our webpage at the link below:

http://www.radios.net.au/marine-radio-packages/marine-hf-ssb-radios/cat_22.html

You can read about the importance of DSC here:

This radio is not really suitable as it does not have selcall - read the info on our webpage at this link which explains why selcall is required in a 4x4.

http://www.radios.net.au/index.php?_a=viewDoc&docId=18

Although the FT-857D covers part of the UHF band it does not cover UHF CB. There is no radio available that will do HF (required for long distance) and UHF CB in the one box (even after modification).

For 4x4 land mobile use we recommend the selcall equipped Icom F7000 HF radio which you can see on our webpage here:

Hello Gary

I did answer your email but must have got lost somewhere

In a marine install it is important that the distance between your tuner and antenna feedpoint is kept as short as possible - ie a couple of metres or less

It is just as important that the distance from your tuner to the grounding point (ie ground plate or metal hull) is also kept as short as is possible (ie less than 2 metres)

For this reason in marine installs the tuner is usually mounted away from the radio (ie out near the antenna / grounding point) and also needs to be waterproof.

In a marine install you also need a tuner with plenty of grunt. Marine freq 2.182mhz require an antenna length of 40 metres whereas most backstay antennas are only 10 metres or so long.

A cheap tuner like the KT-100 does not have the grunt to take a 10 metre long wire and make it look like a 40 metre long wire to your radio. For this you need a marine grade tuner like the ones listed on our webpage at the link below:

 http://vk4ajj.com/cubecart/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=25

As you are not using an Icom radio you can choose between 2 avaialbe units:

The SGC SG-237 tuner - $575 plus freight or

The CG3000 tuner - $499 plus freight

Feel free to give me a call on 07-41257700 if you wish to discuss

Cheers

 Hello Peter

Thanks for your enquiry

The only type approved Hf marine is the Icom m801e - it retails for over $4000

I would not say that "type approval" is universally ignored but what is true is that a couple of provisions of the Radio Communications Act make it common for non type approved radios to be sold in Australia

It is permissable to sell /own a non type approved radio if:

The intention is to use the radio outside of Australian waters - S. 173 of the act

The radio is to be used for the sole purpose of: (s.172)

a)  securing the safety of a vessel, aircraft or space object that was in danger; or

                     (b)  dealing with an emergency involving a serious threat to the environment or

                     (c)  dealing with an emergency involving risk of death of, or injury to, persons; or

                     (d)  dealing with an emergency involving risk of substantial loss of, or damage to, property.

Even Icom Australia itself uses these provisions to justify sale of the Icom m710 marine radio (this is not type approved either) - you will see this unit on the Icom Australia webpage and is marked for export only.

We do not sell the Icom m801e but we do sell the near identical Icom m802 (not type approved)- we are often asked the difference between the 2 models and here is our standard answer:

The Icom m801e has a superior case to the Icom m802 but otherwise they are
the same radio. It is our view that the superior case is not worth an extra
$2000 and for this reason we do not sell the m801e model.

It is worth pointing out that the m801e is only sold in Australia and a few
countries in Europe. The Icom M802 is sold into the huge US market (the
m801e is not) and all other countries in the world. Some dealers will try to
tell you that the m802 is not sufficiently waterproofed - although it is
true that the m801e case has slightly better waterproofing this does not
mean that the waterproofing on the m802 is inadequate. Obviously Icom would
not sell the m802 (only) into its biggest market (the USA) if it considered
that this model had waterproofing issues.

The other advantage in buying an M802 (other than saving big $$s) is that it
is easier to hook up to other devices such as pactor modems. Because the
m802 is the biggest selling HF marine radio in the world, makers of
accessory items provide custom cabling for this model. It can be hard to
find custom cabling for the m801e which is only sold in the small Australian
market and a few small (in relative terms to the USA) European countries.

In respect to the ACMAs position on this - below you will find an email below from the ACMA recently sent to a customer of mine that sums up their position - ie the ACMA does NOT maintain a lsit of approved equipment and thus what radio type you buy does not have any bearing on the issuance of ship related licenses.

Let me know if we can assist further

Cheers and Thanks

Paul
